The Uniform Server is a very easy to use WAMP Server System. The most functioanlity that stands up in it is probably the fact that it can be moved around from folder to folder, drive to drive, without causing any problems or need for re-install or re-setup. Its lightweight functionality also allow use for it to be burned to a CD or for it to be ran from a flash drive (even your camera's flash/memory stick!)
As you may have noticed, when starting or using the Uniform Server a drive is created, mostly called 'W' and that is server's drive or the drive the server is working on. The drive is a SUBST drive of the 'diskw' folder in the main installation folder. If you PC has a hard drive called 'W' already, you can modify the Start.bat or use the Disk Start.vbs file to chnage the drive to another letter.
The server's structure is made so that it would be easy to use and also for better integration with other products. Most might notice that it is a *nix Server like, and that also helps most web developers when working locally so they dont have to modify much when modifying the server for a move to a production server running on *nix elsewhere. Bearing in mind about 75+% of the web is running on *nix Servers.
To add more user friendly features we have 2 new Admin Panel and we are dumping the 'old plain purple' page for Admin Panel 2 starting from the release of 3.3+. Admin Panel 1 will be available for download via our SF Download System upon adding some finish touches and fixing some browser bugs + JavaScript bugs. Both Admin Panel are jam packed with new features and are con-currently under development of new features/functionality.
Though mobility sometimes is an issue when it comes to working on plugins for the sever, we try to work on everything we can integrate to make the server more powerful. We have plugins from FTP Server to additional security softwares. The only plugin we worked on but never got to work is FileZilla and thats because it does not work with SUBST drive which is what Uniform Server uses. Some 3rd party softwares also write to the registry upon installation and also need static locations and this also causes problems, so for plugins like this we write tutorials on how to install them.
3rd party softwares that come with the package are: Apache HTTPd Server, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, ActivePerl, phpMyBackupPro [NEW], and Go Pear. Others included.
